Breakfast has always been my favorite meal of the day. The smell of freshly brewed coffee, flaky pastries, fresh bread and homemade spreads, muesli…all the delicious things I could happily eat every single day of my life. But let’s be honest, reality often has a different breakfast in store for you!

When I’m in a time crunch, between early morning gym sessions and lectures, smoothies are an absolute lifesaver. I chuck everything into my vitamix, give it a quick blend and drink up whilst getting ready for the day. Most of the ingredients in the smoothie, like the banana, yoghurt, chia seeds or oats are all things I would eat in form of overnight oats. This smoothie just allows me to mix things up {quite literally}. This option is especially great, if like me, you’re not properly hungry after hitting the gym, but you still need something to keep you going.

The ingredients I add will vary, depending what I have on hand that day. From time to time I’ll throw in a scoop of protein powder, though this is not a daily routine. I recently found hemp protein in my parent’s kitchen, which I used for the purpose of this recipe. Another beautiful addition to any smoothie is maca powder. I’ve been feeling really  tired lately {a side effect that comes with dissertation research and writing}, so am hoping that by adding maca to smoothies, my energy levels will increase.

  • 1 cup low-fat Greek yoghurt
  • 2 cups mixed frozen berries
  • 300-350 ml milk of choice
  • 1 banana, chopped
  • 1 heaping tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1 tsp hemp protein

Throw the frozen berries, milk and yoghurt into the blender and pulse until smooth. Then add the banana, oats, chia seeds, maca powder and hemp protein and blend until fully combined and any clumps have disappeared. Divide amongst two glasses or jars and enjoy!

    I love this pretty breakfast! I use maca daily and love it—a real game-changer for the hormones! When you add it to yogurt, I find the probiotics, protein, and hormone benefits from the maca really do wonders for a healthy mind and body!
