Today is a good day! After 103  days I’ll finally get to see my sister again. I loathe that our current living situation means that we have to go this long without seeing each other in person. It’s not that we live on opposite sides of the globe but we’ve both been rather busy and haven’t been able to indulge in a sisterly get-together since Christmas. To be perfectly honest, 103 days doesn’t even sound like a lot but it sure did feel like a lifetime.

Skype calls, whatsapping and emailing really just aren’t the same. If you have a sister then you know that its hardly possible to find that special bond with someone else. I’m so proud of all that she’s achieved so far; she’s barely 26 and she’s already finishing her PhD – she’s one smart cookie! I know that she has a bright future ahead and I can’t wait to see what’s to come…!

It’s times like these that make you comprehend that it’s not the things, but rather the people in your life that make you happy and I wish I’d remind myself more often to be thankful for everyone in my life. Everyone I’m surrounded by day in, day out, from family to friends add something so valuable to my life and I treasure that I get to spend every single day with positive, caring and generous people.

Especially in the wake of recent tragic and senseless incidents that have shocked the world I find it comforting to know that I’ll be able to hold my sister in my arms tonight and that I don’t have to let her go all weekend.

I’m celebrating this day with a pasta dish. Food always brings people together and a big pot of pasta immediately glues a beaming smile to people’s faces.

Asparagus season might not have officially started yet but I saw some beautiful stalks at the farmer’s market last weekend and just had to pick up a bundle. Roasted asparagus is my personal favorite. Usually a drizzle of oil, pinch of salt and 20 minutes in the oven is all it takes for a healthy side-dish to come together. I was feeling fancy so I added a bit more flavor and threw the roasted asparagus into pasta which was tossed in garlic-lemon olive oil. Who needs thick, creamy sauces when a lighter pasta dish is so much more delicious?

Parmesan-Roasted Asparagus Pasta in Garlic-Lemon Infused Olive Oil

  • 200g pasta – Tagliatelle
  • 1 bundle of asparagus {500g}
  • 60g of parmesan + extra for serving
  • 60ml olive oil
  • salt + pepper
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • juice from 1/4 lemon
  • a few marjoram twigs, leaves removed and finely chopped


  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Wash the asparagus and pat dry using a paper towel. Cut off the ends and cut into 5cm long bits. Lay the asparagus on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and drizzle with 2 tbsp. of olive oil. Add a pinch of salt and cracked pepper and then grate the parmesan evenly over the asparagus. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes. The time will depend on the thickness of the stalks.
  2. Cook the pasta according to instructions on the pack. Once al dente drain and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining olive oil to a small sauce pan and turn on medium high heat. Add the minced garlic and lemon juice and wait for the garlic to turn golden. Add in some fresh marjoram and set aside.
  4. To assemble toss the cooked pasta in the garlic-lemon olive oil and add in the roasted asparagus. Serve with more freshly grated parmesan.

    This pasta looks gorgeous! I haven’t seen any asparagus here yet, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled! I got to spend some time with my sister last weekend and it was soul satisfying. The rest of my family (other sister, brother, parents) live so far away it’s a once or twice a year visit kind of situation, which is hard, but makes spending time together so precious. Enjoy your sister time!

    This pasta looks so good. Roasted asparagus is one of my favourites too and it sounds so good in this dish. Have a lovely weekend with your sister!
