Good morning and happy WIAW! Today I have a special birthday edition for you. I celebrated my birthday on Saturday and since people were wondering what cake I got I figured I’d write up a whole day of birthday eats.
I was home for a long weekend {I took Friday off of work to get into birthday mood} and celebrated with my parents and my younger brother.
We kicked the day off with some banana pancakes. I prepared the batter the night before so they came together in a flash. I was inspired by Emily’s breakfast and added a “drizzle” of leftover chocolate ganache on top. Perfection!
Onto the cake. Originally I requested this cake {I mean, who wouldn’t want that cake?} but berries are a little tough to come by these days with snow flurries and all so I had to settle for the berry-less version. We spruced up the mascarpone filling with frozen raspberries which gave it a summery feel. I will be making the original version as soon as I find the first decent berries!
Knowing that we’d be going out for dinner we kept lunch smallish. We threw together a simple yet satisfying salad topped with tomatoes and toasted {or slightly burned} pine nuts. On the side we had baked chicken strips. And I also had a big Bretzn’ {this made my Munich-loving heart beat faster!}
Alongside my lunch my mom poured me a glass of grape juice. I may be 23 years old but I still prefer the children’s version of wine….what can say?
After lunch we finally had cake and of course a cup of coffee.
Here’s what the cake looked like from the inside. The ganache was a showstopper! Heaven on a cake!!!
For dinner we kept it simple with Italian food. We went to one of my favorite restaurants where they serve gigantic pizzas. We began with grown-up drinks {Aperol Spitzer} before we dug into the monster of a pizza.
I requested my pizza half topped with mushrooms, the other half topped with caprese {mozzarella and tomatoes}.
To give you an idea how big the pizzas were here it is in comparison to my hand. They really are huge!
Being temporarily stuffed with pizza we opted to skip dessert but I later had another slather of birthday cake at home.
Oh, I just love birthdays!!!
Thank you to Jenn for hosting this “birthday party”.
