My life, Travel

Saludos de Puerto Rico

December 9, 2012

Hello from Puerto Rico. Although I’ll keep this post as short as I can I just wanted to check in and tell you that I’m having the most fabulous time with Christina. I mean, how could we not. It’s warm, sunny and we’re spending the day at the beach.

I arrived on Wednesday just before midnight after 19 hours of travelling. As you might imagine I was bored after 4 hours on the plane but luckily they showed some pretty decent movies that kept me entertained before I eventually dozed off for the remainder of the long flight.

I nearly missed the plane from Miami to San Juan since I only had a 2 hour layover and we arrived late. The airport personnel told me that if I wanted to catch my plane I’d have to do so without my luggage, or I could wait for my suitcase and miss my flight. Obviously I’m not just going to leave my belongings behind while I have a great vacation so I waited at the baggage claim area for about half an our, dropped it off at the check-in counter, pushed and shoved my way through security and sprinted to my gate and made it just in time for the last-call to board. I was beyond happy when I saw that my suitcase made it onto the plane too.

We spent Thursday morning on a sightseeing tour around Old San Juan and had a look around the Fort.

After lunch with one of Christina’s colleagues we dropped her off at the airport and made our way to our new hotel which is conveniently located right at the beach. Our hotel has the most amazing gingerbread house in the lobby which resembles Old San Juan. This and the Christmas decoration scattered around the hotel is the only thing that remind us that it’s December.

The weather is beyond gorgeous with blue skies all the way scattered with just a couple of pixar clouds here and there throughout the day. And the sea breeze not only makes the heat more bearable but also makes the most amazing beach waves! For some at least…

We spent Friday relaxing by the beach and pool. From the weather perspective Friday was the worst day so far since it was partly overcast throughout the day. But Christina and I learned the hard way that sunburns happen even when the sun is no where to be seen. After that painful experience we are now lathering on the sunscreen every 2-3 hours. Let’ me tell you, SPF 50 and reapplying every 2 hours is necessary in this corner of the world.

Yesterday we went on a sailing and snorkeling tour. We were picked up from the hotel at 8.45am and spent the day cruising around on a catamaran which took us to a beautiful secluded island where we snorkeled our way through the day. The water was turquoise and warm and it was a dream to just splash around the ocean all day long.

We arrived back at the hotel at around 4.15 and since it was still so nice and warm we relaxed by the pool for a few hours before calling it a day.

We weren’t really in the mood to get all dressed up for dinner and had lots of Christmas movies to get through so we ordered room-service and enjoyed dinner in bed. We had plans of watching at least 2 Christmas movies per night but I somehow managed to fall asleep after 20 minutes of TV entertainment on both Thursday and Friday so I made sure to stay awake until at least 10.30pm!

Today we’ve basically just been hanging out in the sun all day. We got up early and got ready for the beach before indulging in the continental breakfast buffet. Once again the weather today is unreal. It’s great to just sit by the beach, listening to waves and palm trees and going for a swim to cool off every hour or so…

I don’t even want to think about leaving this gorgeous island tomorrow. Next time I come I’ll make sure to stay longer than 4.5 days.

Hope all is well where you are. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and stay warm Smile

Waow, sounds like you had a great time !!! Here in Birmingham it’s pretty cold, no risk to catch a sunburn, but at least it feels like Christmas !!! Are you already back in Munich ?

I want to back too. It’s too cold and snowy here in Munich. But at least the cold weather will do some good to my sunburn.

What?! 4.5 day in Puerto Rico? That’s crazy. I hope you got a dirt cheap flight. 🙂

But it looks lovely! I could use some Puerto Rico right now. I’m not a fan of 0 degrees and wet shoes…

I know…very stupid especially considering that the traveling time was like 19 hours but it was sooo worth it. I didn’t really get a good deal on a flight but we got a nice offer on the hotel 🙂
