WIAW: Alex’s 27th Birthday

November 14, 2012

Good morning and happy WIAW! I’m sorry I haven’t had a lot of time to visit your blogs this past week, but with it’s been pretty hectic around here lately. My family makes fun of me for saying that I’m so busy that I hardly have time to do something other than work. It’s true though, I feel like these past weeks have been pretty stressful. I’ve been travelling a lot and had people visit me. It’s also one of the reasons why I’ve been blogging a bit less now than I have 6 months ago. I would have so many recipes to share with you but sometimes I just don’t have time after work to sit down and write up a full post. My sister gets annoyed when I only right every second day, but food blogging is so much more than just writing about food. Cooking, taking pictures and writing about food takes up lots of time so I just wanted to give you a heads up that if for any reason I don’t write for a couple of days it’s because of lack of time, but I still love all my readers and I truly appreciate you hanging around.

Now that we that out of the way let’s talk about the important stuff, the food. I’ll show you all what I ate on Saturday. I went home for the weekend since Alex {my older brother} turned 27 on Friday and flew in for the weekend. I only arrived Friday night and left Sunday around noon, but it’s always nice to be home and hang out with my family, even if it’s only for a day. And whenever my brother’s home, things are guaranteed to be entertaining.

A big thanks as always to Jenn from Peas and Crayons for hosting the weekly foodie event.

My morning began with a big bowl of oats with frozen raspberries stirred in at the end. Since we didn’t have any granola at home I was forced to top the oats with Mo’s favorite Ovomaltine crisp müesli. Topped with fresh blueberries and a few raspberries.

On the side I had a cup of coffee with milk {in my Christmas cup}. I think I’ve gotten used to the taste of coffee at work and am actually starting to find the taste OK, but whenever I come home I realize that our coffee is just so much better. Does anyone else find that Nespresso makes the best coffee or is it just me?

For lunch I helped my mom cook oven roasted duck filet with Kraut. I’ve wanted to share the recipe with you for quite some time now so I took pictures along the way. As soon as we opened the fridge to get cooking Sunny woke up and was ready to help us! {this picture is just for you, Christina!!! Red heart }

Along with the duck we had a salad made of Kraut {cabbage} which is so delicious due to a bit of fried bacon. We also made red cabbage to go with it.

For dessert I had a slice of Alex’s birthday cake which my mom made Friday night. The cake is generally comparable to Tiramisu except for the fact that it’s made with apple sauce and heavy cream and not with mascarpone and espresso. If you’re interested I can share the recipe too.

For dinner Alex invited friends out to dinner and asked us to come along. As a starter I chose salad from the salad bar {carrots, cauliflower, mixed greens, cucumber, Greek salad, tomatoes}.

As my main course I chose potato Spätzle {small potato dough noodles} covered with cheese, mixed with ham chunks. I guess the whole thing can be compared to mac n cheese.

Everyone was stuffed after dinner so dessert didn’t happen although there was some good stuff on the menu. Hope you’re having a great week. Can’t wait to check out all your eats which unfortunately will have to wait until tonight since I’m helping out in the pilot plant all day!!

Have a great Wednesday you all!!!

    Your eats look great, and I’m starting to think your mom might just be the best cook around. I love that you had to force yourself “to top the oats with Mo’s favorite Ovomaltine crisp müesli. ” It still looks tasty.
    I understand about fitting blogging into your every day life; it’s a part time job at the bare minimum. You’re a writer, a photographer, a chef, a research assistant, a marketing guru and a tech person all at the same time. It’s tough, and a lot of work, so sometimes we can’t post all the time. I get it. Hang in there and do what you can, when you can.

    Happy Brithday to Alex! That cake looks so cool! Most of the time people just have your classic sheet cake, but applesauce and cream sound like a nice change-up.

    I feel like I’ve been slacking on reading and commenting on blogs too this past week. I’ve just been so busy! Definitely need to work on that. Happy WIAW!
