inside my beauty basket

September 3, 2012

Today, instead of writing about food, for a fun change of pace I thought I’d show you some of my “can’t live without” beauty picks. I’d like to say at the very beginning of this post that I know nothing, really nothing, about makeup, applying makeup or things like that. I’m much more of a fashion lover. I religiously read Vogue, InStyle and Harper’s Bazaar and get a thrill out of browsing net-a-porter, even though in reality I might be able to afford just a pair of tights {although I do splurge on very irregular occasions, I am a girl after all}

When it comes to beauty essentials I’m all about finding the right products for me, where I know that they’ll make my skin glow and my hair shine. Everyone’s different though, these are just the products that I couldn’t live without. Since I enjoy looking into other people’s make-up bags, I hope you enjoy a peek into my beauty basket as well.

Let’s start at the top, with hair products. I’ve been a long-time fan of Kérastase hair oils. They did change some of their products a while ago, so I now use the Elixir Ultime, to combat split ends. The product really works wonders. I haven’t been to the hairdresser in a very long time {long story, but I just don’t trust them} and so I rely on my shampoos and oils to do the job. My sister, mom and I all use the Kérastase oil and we are all very happy with the results. Another great oil is obviously Moroccan Oil. This, I use a lot during the summer when my hair is exposed to the sun for hours on end {e.g. when I’m at the beach, lake, etc.} It leaves my hair sooo incredibly soft and the smell is amazing. Another oil I highly recommend.

Up until not that long ago I didn’t bother about shampoos or conditioners that much. I used whatever was at home and when I bought something for myself I just bought whatever smelled good. This summer however, my hair felt like it needed to be treated especially nice so I went looking for something that I could spoil my locks with. I went to a department store here in Munich, picked up a few different samples from brands that sounded interesting and tested away. The one’s I liked most were both from Kiehl’s, though in the end I chose the Olive Fruit Oil Shampoo and Conditioner {the Amino Acid Shampoo was a very close second}. If you choose to find a different shampoo for yourself I can only recommend going to a store and picking up some samples. If you’re going to be spending €17 on shampoo you really want it to be the right one for you!

Since your skin is our the largest organ, the right skincare is really important. I try to use as much organic skincare as possible and for the last few years I’ve been very happy with KORA Organics. This skincare line was created by Miranda Kerr, who I happen to be quite a big fan of. Ever since seeing her in her first Victoria’s Secret runway show I’ve followed her career path and of course that’s how I found out about KORA {my brother even got me a signed autograph for my birthday a couple of years ago Smile }. Before saying what does a model know about creating skincare, think again…because the moisturizers and body lotions really work wonders. I’ve tried lots of the products: face cream, body lotions and exfoliating creams, the lip balm and rose hip oil and I couldn’t be any happier. Yes, the products are pricey, especially when you consider and factor in shipping but they really go a long way and because they really make my skin shine I stick with it. They are certified organic and smell amazing! The products are usually on my Christmas wish list and so far Santa has not disappointed.

Apart from using the KORA body lotion I love the Ligne St Barth products, especially the avocado oil and aloe vera gel. The avocado oil can be used in dry hair as well but I tend to use them on my body. I mix in a couple of drops {again, a little goes a long way} with my body lotion and it really helps if you have dry skin, which I have in the winters and summers. The aloe vera gel is perfect as an après sun body lotion as it soothes and calms your skin {so perfect for my upcoming trip to Puerto Rico!}

So what do I color my face with? Nothing, really. There’s exactly one product I use daily on my face, except for toners and moisturizers and that would be the MAC eye liner in Smolder. I do not use foundations or concealers because I’m hardly qualified enough to apply eyeliner {ask my sister}. If I’m feeling really girly I might add a coating of Lancôme Hypnôse mascara but that happens about once a month or when I go out at night. I have dry eyes so I often find myself unconsciously rubbing my eyes which is also a reason why mascara isn’t the best idea for me. For my lips, if I’m feeling really fancy, I apply Chanel Aqualumière lip gloss in a color where you can only faintly tell that I’m wearing something at all.

At the moment my scent of choice is the Miss Dior Cherie eau de perfume by Christian Dior. Not only is the bottle super cute and girly but the smell is not overly intoxicating….just perfect! I used to like perfumes that were flowery and soft but this is more grown-up and the smell is just sooooo good!

And of course this post would not be complete without me asking you about your beauty go-to’s. What can you not live without? Which skin care do you use? Do you know how to properly apply make-up {if yes, will you please teach me?!}

    I really want to buy some keratese items – my hair is well in need of some TLC.
    It is good to hear that Kora works well (as a fellow Aussie like Miranda I am a big fan of hers too)

    I am hopeless at eyeliner! But I am ok at all other makeup application – maybe we should swap tips 🙂

      Oh, I’m so jealous of people living in Australia, having super easy access to the KORA products. For me it’s always such a big deal to have them shipped to Europe. I always welcome any kind of makeup tips, although I have so admit, I’m not going to be a lot of help to you. Even though applying eyeliner is the only thing I can sort of do, it’s definitely not my forte 😉

    I have the same perfume! I love it. I’m terrible at applying makeup too, I never wear any. Unless I’m going out and even then it’s usually when I’m coerced into it haha 🙂

      hahaha…so true. that’s really the only time I will put any effort in to applying makeup 😉

    OMG I can so relate! I am so lost when it comes to applying makeup, fixing hair, pretty much anything beauty related. It’s crazy because I just got my hair cut last week (8 inches off!) and my hair stylist used the Moroccan Oil products! I had never seen them before and now I’ve seen them 2x in less than a week – crazy how things work like that. My can’t live without beauty products are Murad SPF 15 Oil Mattifying Face Moisturizer, Aquaphor, and Pür Minerals Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation with SPF 15.

      8 inches ?! I don’t know how I would feel about that, I always just tell the hairdresser to cut off the split ends, but apparently my split ends are 3-4 inches!!!
      I’ll have a look into your beauty picks. I always love exploring new brands and products. Also, what did you think of the Moroccan oil, isn’t it amazing!!!!!
