WIAW: grocery shopping in the garden

Hello everyone. HAPPY WIAW! Being able to share my eats with you all makes my Wednesdays really special and I look forward to them just almost as much as I look forward to Fridays. Today I’m sharing Monday’s eats with you. I’m still at home (I fly back to England on Friday) so I basically spend 5-6 hours per day in the kitchen baking, cooking and working on recipes. It makes me feel like an actual recipe developer and I have to say, I quite like it 🙂

You will see that with Monday’s eats I was able to eat a lot of local produce. And by local I mean straight from our back yard. The salad is excellent and I’ve already had a couple of strawberries. My mom is an avid gardener and I really hope that one day, when I have my own garden she’ll pass on some of her expertise to me and help me create my own vegetable patch.


As always, a big thanks to Jenn for hosting the weekly foodie event 🙂 I love that the theme for this month is snacking, because who doesn’t love a healthy mid-morning or afternoon snack???

The day started off with a gigantic bowl of greek yogurt. It was topped off with basically anything and everything I could find in the fridge: strawberries, blueberries and cherries. For some extra crunch I added home-made granola and of course banana. Sometimes I really wish I’d still live in Indonesia where we had a banana tree in the garden. But I suppose, then I wouldn’t have strawberries and lettuce growing in the back yard.

I hung around the house, walked Sunny, worked out and invaded the kitchen before it was time for lunch. It doesn’t happen too often, but sometimes all I want is an egg. Of course I couldn’t pass on some fresh salad from the garden so I made myself a bowl of salad with tomatoes and mushrooms. Topped it off with hummus and tzatziki and had an egg, sunny-side-up, on top. I ate it straight out of the bowl to save dishes . . . and because I was super-hungry. It was scrumptious!

When my mom came home from work we had coffee and dessert, Mannerschnitten (one of Austria’s finest creations, if you ask me!).

 I then continued my kitchen projects before having my afternoon snack. I’m totally loving watermelon at the moment. Perfect for hydration!!! I also had to taste-test one of the recipes I made (banana bread energy bars).

These are sooo good. They’re quite similar to these bars, just a little lighter and perfect for the summer. The recipe is coming your way very soon.

I was in charge of preparing dinner for the family. We had quinoa-stuffed kohlrabi. The recipe may be found here. The kohlrabi was picked straight from the garden, of course and it made a wonderfully light dinner. Everyone was in the mood for dessert/ snack so I prepared a bowl of greek yogurt, more granola and a spoon (or two) of my mom’s home-made apricot jam. Cherry on top (another one of my summer favorites).

    Your quinoa kohlrabi looks fantastic and so healthy! I’ve never had kohlrabi before…I’ve never seen it here…whats it taste like? I just made a batch of homemade granola and posted it to my WIAW post. Nothing is better than homemade!
