I think I was a little too optimistic about Spring being here to stay earlier this week because when I looked out of the window this morning, motivated for a energizing morning run, things had gone back to the typical dreary English weather. So I guess I’ll just have to go to the gym. I’ve lived here long enough though, to know that the weather can quickly change so I looked up the forecast for today and tomorrow and there’s not really a sun ray in sight this weekend.
There’s something to look forward to tomorrow!
Anyways, earlier this week I realized that, even though I’ve been breakfasting on lots of oats I’ve never really had traditional English Porridge. I was intrigued to try out a recipe, but all the recipes online say something different. So, who better to ask than my English friends, right?
Well, it turns out that cereal is the new porridge because most people haven’t had a bowl of oats in years. They could however give me a couple of tips of how they think it’s made:
add a pinch of salt
sweeten with sugar
use heavy cream instead of milk
don’t used milk add all – only use water – and serve with milk
sweeten with honey
soak the oats overnight and cook with milk in the morning
Frankly, I was confused because what my friends were saying, firstly seemed contradicting and secondly did not give me a clear vision of how to prepare porridge. So, I tried to combine some of the ideas above and create my own porridge recipe. I know that this probably has little to do with the traditional English porridge, but for now this will have to keep me satisfied.
If anyone out there has an English porridge recipe, please share it with me. Thank you!
Toppings really do make all the difference!
Served with the usual cup of green tea. On second thought I should have probably had English breakfast tea with it, but green tea is just toooo gooood!
Hope you all have a wonderful, sunny weekend!
